To be fair, Dr. Rasmussen, I think I’m expected to watch all 100 hours of his YouTube 
coronavirus updates before I can weigh in, only to be called biased & unfair if I still disagree with his theory... We virologists need to sit this one out! Who needs experts anyway?

I'm a smart and curious person with legitimate questions. You have/had a prime opp to educate me/others. Instead I feel as if I've wandered into an exclusive club of mean kids. Your prof has a legit image prob right now, and IMO you've settled on a poor repair strategy here.
Chris, I *am* trying to educate you. You are questioning how a 12bp insertion could get into a virus genome - I answered by asking you a similar question. Now, I didn't answer my - or your - question, so let me do that here. Evolution is the answer - as we describe in the paper.

Well, evolution is certainly one answer. So is genetic manipulation of the sort routinely used by virologists to explore gain of function and spillover by adding a proteolytic cleavage site at the S1/S2 boundary. Why is evolution "more likely" in your view here?

Chris, if you haven't read the CIDRAP article, please do so - it has good answers. What's important to remember here - I look at my computer screen writing a tweet on the internet and I think to myself - WOW, how's that even possible?! Then I realize I'm not an engineer.

Was the evolution natural, or accelerated through gain of function research?

There is zero indication that it was "accelerated" through GOF research. Polybasic cleavage sites are present in many betacoronaviruses, including ones that don't infect humans at all. They all evolved naturally.

Do we see evidence of viral evolution like the example that started this question? Or is it conjecture that is merely possible within the realm of evolutionary theory?

If you can link to a documented case of a 12bp+ occurrence from nature that would be nice.

http://tcoffee.crg.cat/apps/tcoffee/result?rid=b54f6229 … That's three coronaviruses SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2, and MERS-CoV aligned, you'll notice MERS has a lot of different sequences, including a 50 amino acid sequence (150 nucleotides) not found in the others. A 12 bp addition is not a surprising addition.
