Wow, the 'splaining going on in this thread is epic!

-
I know... So crazy. Maybe not my best quote, but I do like the idea of little mutant babies - whether they be viruses or humans

Weirdly I was thinking exactly the same thing today. You don't look at every child and say "WOW! A new strain of human!".
-
Of course not. Not every child will have a significant mutation, and mutant powers don't typically manifest until adolescence, as shown in the X-Men documentaries.

Sequences in progeny are not identical to their parents' because of meiotic recombination. This is entirely different than novel mutations that arise in progeny, as the sequences inherited in the offspring are present in the parents even if on different chromosomes in a pair.
-
It would have been better to simply say that mutations occur, most are either neutral or deleterious to the organism itself, and there is no evidence that mutations observed thus far are associated with increased virulence.

There is a massive diference between recombination of genetic material of two parents ( sexual reproduction) and the variation it brings, and mutation of virus. Mutation involves miscopying genetic sequences.
-
There's 10s of new mutations every human generation because human genetic sequences get miscopied.

: “Viruses mutate, so it doesn’t really mean anything. It’s part of the viral life cycle like humans making babies. Babies are mutants of the parents and the same is true of viruses, the baby viruses may have a mutation or two of the cell they came from”.
