I am constitutionally unable to write a talk until the day before I give it. Is this a recognised disorder?

Yup,same. No matter how seemingly important the talk, i just can’t do it till extreme duress kicks in. Some rumination occurs in the meantime though. I keep telling myself than when I’m a grownup, I’ll stop doing this. No sign of that anytime soon.

Oh yes, there is certainly plenty of mulling over procrastination going on in the meantime which presumably makes it much easier to actually get it together at the last minute ...

"But while procrastination is a vice for productivity, I’ve learned — against my natural inclinations — that it’s a virtue for creativity." [and let's be honest - it's not just talks we wait until last minute, it's everything].https://www.nytimes.com/2016/01/17/opinion/sunday/why-i-taught-myself-to-procrastinate.html …

Probably true. But it always seems an unnecessary painful way to go about things, no?

I think the solution is to give fewer talks. Free up space for postdocs and students who benefit more and we are often talking about their work anyway.

Agreed - on both accounts
. [although, I do enjoy some self flagellation every once in a while...].
Also, this is what I call my 'motivational' todo item. I suspect I might never get to tick it off, but it works.pic.twitter.com/4RAbjbirpw
