Good question - although I don't actually know what the mossie distribution is throughout the year. Yes, it gets high in the summer months, but there's something about year-long persistence. @NathanGrubaugh and @MeyerBjoern to the rescue...?

It’s been endemic to parts of Europe for a long time. Lots of competent Culex mosquitoes. Spread to Northern Europe suppressed by cooler temps.

Low temperatures indeed limit WNV spread across Europe - but cases are yearly reported from the southern/central countries. The extreme warm summer must have sparked this year's outbreak.
