The only point, correct me if i'm wrong, is the long sign up process, including Q/A to access full, which is a bit of a turn down

Yeah, the sign-up requirements are annoying - but I think the level of detail needed is set by the project. So since we wouldn't have restrictions on our data, I think this process should be short for our purposes.
