Hah! Yeah, I stayed out of that storm - but definitely "last name + lab", because "research topic lab" is just too pretentious. I did try to combine both methods at some point "Andersen Lab for Friggin' Awesome Research". Turns out that was too long to fit on a logo.
I tried to shorten it to "ANdersen Awesome Labs", but I realized it wouldn't make for the best abbreviation.
