No question it's hard - and takes a lot of time/effort (~10 in-person interviews >1yr before I had my first postdoc hires). #1, 3, 4, and 5 will help - and so will a website (I get >90% of applicants coming through website + Twitter).

Lab name = last name + lab over research topic?

Hah! Yeah, I stayed out of that storm - but definitely "last name + lab", because "research topic lab" is just too pretentious. I did try to combine both methods at some point "Andersen Lab for Friggin' Awesome Research". Turns out that was too long to fit on a logo.

Yes, absolutely - and here you likely need to be creative. I define "niche" very broadly and arguably I haven't exactly found a niche myself. For our core (published) research, I have failed to obtain funding - so we had to get creative.

Ummmm...#5 might be fine for you, but I would add "take some folks you know and trust with you" for POC, women, LGBTQ, etc.....
