Quite depressing that publication by press release still goes on. The piece suggests it is of public health importance (ignoring whether it is or not) but fails to provide any information.
Given that this appears to be a new species (as per @HelenBranswell STAT article), there is absolutely nothing surprising here - if we sequence enough bats, I'd expect us to find hundreds of new species. No? Filoviruses even more so - we already found filos in Spain (in bats).

And of course - it goes without saying - that most/all of these will either be unable to infect humans (let alone transmit between) and/or will be non-pathogenic.

If, as they seem to be saying, they believe it is a potential threat to humans, not sharing the genome (and the virus if isolated) for nearly 2 years seems wrong.
