I really need a new MPB **now** because I made the cheap decision years ago to get a small hard drive. I'm dying over here with data stored on multiple external drives. So the current model is that bad? I need one urgently. :( So frustrated. It's really affecting my productivity.

for my six year old rMBP

Yup, that bad - it's really unfortunate, and I just don't see Apple fixing the issues any time soon - the touch bar and butterfly keys are probably here to stay. Not quite there yet, but within a year or two, I'm hoping it'll be viable to switch to a Chromebook!
