A lot of talk about sequencing and tracking the epidemic. If you're interested in learning how this all works, we recently wrote a large(ish) review on genomic epidemiology. Link: Get it here:

  2. This is a pretty interesting tidbit from the most recent report on . Not surprising - kinda sad, but definitely necessary. The R0 of misinformation is massively higher than the R0 of the virus.

Note, the scientific response has been absolutely stellar in my opinion, so it's important not to mix it all up.

So in case you were wondering - the is far from broken and it's transforming our ability to accelerate scientific findings - some 💩, many 🌟. Just take a look at all of the *amazing* science already published on a virus we didn't know existed a month ago. 👍👏🍺

Oh yeah, ACE2 really IS the receptor - same as SARS-CoV. Turns out TMPRSS2 is involved too.

So how long does it take to figure out what the receptor is? Hmmm, about a week... Yikes.

Oh hey, these folks sequenced and released the first sequence allowing for the development of diagnostics.

These short inserts do indeed exist in relative to its closest sequenced relative (BetaCoV/bat/Yunnan/RaTG13/2013, seen here ). However, a simple BLAST of such short sequences shows match to a huge variety of organisms. No reason to conclude HIV.

Clear evidence of asymptomatic transmission of outside China. This case report is pretty interesting and worth reading.

For the modeling folks out there - is anybody looking at suitability for 2019-nCoV in addition to transport and the risk of imports? Several places in Africa would be at high risk for imports, but given climate differences, possibly not all that suitable for onward transmission?

First person-to-person transmission in the US isn't quite as alarming as it might sound at first. A woman who had been to Wuhan and got sick when she was back in Chicago passed the virus to her husband. &

Very solid review of excessive extrapolation from murine models and other shortcomings in microbiome science. People will lose patience with the microbiome if these issues aren't addressed (they already are...), which will delay its clinical application:
