ah yes a column on the societal pros & cons of sex redistribution from the man who argued for using the force of the state to ban anything deemed pornographic

it’s hidden well because Ross is brilliant at obfuscating the trick behind strong prose & bafflingly obscure subject matter experts but really all this piece boils down to the well-worn trick of blaming society’s moral sins for creating a small band of internet freaks

have begun to resent morality-based political argumentation for this reason; it always winds up in the wagon ruts of sinfulness -> libertine society -> threats of state oppression on behalf of “sinful” group -> reluctant embrace of state oppression on behalf of “good” group

this is pretty much the same trick used to blame various factions for creating internet nazis; you’re harnessing the internet nazis and wielding them as a club in hope of obtaining your desired political ends.

I guess what I’m trying to say is don’t trust any analysis of a band of horrible internet freaks that isn’t willing to stop at “these horrible internet freaks are bad and we as a society should band together to agree they’re bad” but instead shoehorns in preferred moral positions

similar tactic, writ large for Trumpism - each time a new threat is encountered we see a reflexive retreat back to a cheap & tired stanzahttps://twitter.com/kt_so_it_goes/status/911972290451136513?s=21 …

Can't wait for his next column, "Ban porn, redistribute women, and restrict abortion" by Ross Douthat, who is totally not supportive of state intervention to take sexual power from women and give it back to men because conservatism.

I cannot bring myself to read him, but now I can imagine him holding forth.

I guess where you lose me is “unless the state....” I don’t see him as theocratic. Also he’s talking about “sex robots” and not “state sponsored rape”. Presumably not the sentient HBO kind, but he clearly likes him some Westworld.

"How should we think about this thing" is not the same as "you should think this way about this thing", but I get that some people have trouble with that step. Also, "seems to be" is straining really hard in that sentence and probably needs someone to come by and share the load.

Put in the context of actual incel arguments, I don't think that's uncharitable in the least. That's the precise argument made by these guys, although they would drop "state sponsored."
-
(or, rather, they would be in favor of state-sponsored rape but also be in favor of rapes not sponsored by the state)
