A brief for a forthcoming research article being published by our research team ( ) in the Journal of Learning Disabilities. Schools struggle to find children with dyslexia because far too many students struggle to read and spell.

Mississippi teacher Kara Paige is at the table today & says she wants to bust the myth that not all kids can learn to read. ALL kids “can learn if you prep teachers and teach them how to teach reading.”

Today a boy said, “You love us difficult kids huh?” I replied, “Difficult? Wouldn’t describe you that way. ‘Strong’, ‘resilient’, ‘full of gifts to share’. That’s what I see when I look at you.” He cried, “I wish every hurt kid knew someone saw that in them.” Me too.

If you didn't get the training in your prep program, I’d recommend or something similar. Join @TheReadingLeague. Then write grants to get the materials you need & your kids deserve. Then write a letter to your College of Ed (& make it public).

In my book, “Failing Students or Failing Schools,” I mentioned how Hirsch shaped my understanding of reading comprehension, which is very different from what we would observe in most schools today. Reading comprehension cannot simply be taught as a set of “strategies.” 1/2
