Super precise measurements reveal day-to-day variation (i.e. batch effects) in the fitness of mutant yeast lineages. To understand how fitness varies across subtly differing environments, we perform one giant experiment! Follow , and I at

Daaaaang! Phage isolated by undergraduates save the life of a 15-year-old CF patient who was out of other options! Congrats and Dr. Spencer! Who can possibly compete with your NSF "Broader Impacts" section now?

Since the experiment will at the end have 9 different bioreactors, we decided to go with this sticker set as a visual identifier in addition to our labeling scheme . We thought this would be the least confusing setup for everybody.

Starting the experiment today with , , and ! Our plan is to evolve adaptive strains further, to identify how tradeoffs change over evolutionary time. It's also an excuse to use lots of colored tape...

Who else has been in research for years and still can't spell the word 'fluorescent' correctly on the first attempt? 🙋🏻‍♂️🙈

I'm really excited about this work with and , not least because of the questions it leaves unanswered, which we allude to in Figure 4 of 's tweet thread. Namely, how does the front move as populations adapt. 1/n

Very excited to present our work on how first-step adaptation is constrained by trade-offs, through mapping the evolutionary accessible trait-space at a single nucleotide resolution. Many thanks to my advisors and and everyone who helped along the way 1/n

Excited to announce that I'll be starting as an Asst. Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt, Fall 2020. We'll be looking to recruit kind, motivated researchers who are interested in experimental evolution in microbes!

Our new pre-print: if you’ve ever wondered what happens when selection is strong, migration is fast and mutation is abundant, wonder no more! (or keep wondering and let us know what you think!) Joachim Hermisson.

How do noisy barcode freq from one timepoint affect fitness, which is estimated as change in barcode freq over many timepoints? is investigating! Biases introduced by bubble product (see ) can inflate fitness w/ &

Do flames protect against contamination? I set out 2 plates for 15 min without a flame and 2 plates for 15 min near a flame. I also used 2 unexposed plates as a control. The result? Controls are important! Looks like maybe our plates were contaminated to begin with!

Which somatic variants in blood are most “pathogenic”? How does mutation, drift and selection shape the genetic diversity in our blood? Why is clonal haematopoiesis age dependent? Data from 50,000 individuals points to a simple answer...

This matches a simple model of bubble product formation. Anneal matches occur with prob. p^2, mismatches with prob. 2p(1-p). Mismatches are less likely to get through column (0.1 means 10% get through compared to matches).

A new source of noise we study in is ‘bubble-product’ Thanks for the tip! We think bubbles occur when extra PCR cycles cause templates to mis-anneal & stick to cleanup columns. It leads to over-counting high-freq barcodes w/ &
