Pensive me - You live. You die. You’re forgotten. Nobody gives a shit about you three generations down the line. Yeah, there are historical wrongs, but things change constantly and there’s no point hanging on to grudges for injustices towards your ancestors generations ago.

Outrage at a Hindu woman eloping with a Muslim. Some pretty strong language. 'May God punish Kusum for the wrong she has done to her parents. She has cast a stone on her parents' reputation.'

Hindu Muslim riots over temples and mosques... (no, not Ayodhya. This is Byculla, Mumbai October 1936 - way before partition)

While most things have changed dramatically in three generations, some haven't.

The diary mentions three deaths of figures from outside his family and social circles. Gandhi, Nehru and Patel.

And my father’s birth… Apparently, the medical expenses related to his delivery were a princely Rs. 470. For my own kid born 60 years later, not too far from where he was, the cost was > 500x of that.

S.S.C. exam seems to be a big deal back then. An entry devoted to my grandmother appearing for her SSC exam in 1950.

I discovered the names of one set of my great great grandparents. Never thought of it this way, but you’re a mix of genes of 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents, 16 great great grandparents… go back 8 generations and you’ve inherited genes from 256 individuals.

The diary chronicles births, marriages, deaths and other important life events in his family and social circles. Here's his own marriage and birth of my grandmother.

There is an entry for purchase of a second hand radio in 1956 for the first time. It’s only 60 years ago that buying a radio, even second hand, was a big deal!

Over a 12 year period from 1927 to 1938, he saw 950 movies (~80 a year... 6-7 a month) in the cinema hall at a total cost of Rs. 450 (Not sure you can watch 1 movie in that much today!) This also includes 7 movies he saw while he was based in Karachi for 2 months in 1930.

Wellington, Empress, Capital, Precious, Opera, Excelsior, Empire, Imperial and Edward seem to be the main cinema halls in South Bombay of the time. I don’t think any of them is still in existence.

He has kept a meticulous record of all the movies he saw in the cinema from 1927 to 1938 mentioning the date, theatre, ticket cost, cast, genre, production studio and his rating of the movie. Hollywood cinema, seems to be the main form of entertainment for him.

I don’t know much about him except that he grew up and lived in South Bombay and was probably rich. First thing which strikes me is he writes in the Queen’s English with beautiful handwriting. This is all the way back in the 1920s and 1930s.

Been six years since my grandmother passed away. Going through her personal belongings now, came across her father’s (my great grandfather’s) personal diary. A thread.

I believe Religion/God was invented by man because the alternative - randomness and emptiness is terrifying. Here's a brilliantly nuanced take on the same - Origin of religion shaped by evolutionary forces, from Daniel Kahneman's 'Thinking, Fast and Slow'.
