In 2022, we supported 22 women and girls who had either experienced #FGM or were at risk of FGM, aged between 7 and 51. Some children were at risk of FGM abroad. We stand together with both survivors and our partners to end #FGM and all forms of violence against women & girls.

Remembering beautiful Banaz Mahmod, murdered at this time, on this date in 2006. Murdered by men in her family in a so called honour killing for leaving an abusive marriage and daring to love a man they disapproved of. RIP, thinking of you.

We agree with that #HonourBasedAbuse is a form of Domestic Abuse. A statutory definition on HBA and consistent data are essential to tackling HBA. The voice and lived experiences of survivors must be at the heart of change. 💙

Whilst the holiday season is a time for most to celebrate and switch off, it can also be difficult for some. However, it can be a time to reflect, heal, grow & live a life away from abuse. Make time for yourself and spend it with the loved ones you choose to have around you.

D) Stronger positive representation of black and minoritised women in public spaces to mitigate perceptions held by victims that black and minoritised women ‘ have to accept abuse’ to uphold honour and prevent shame.

C) Stronger messages to victims and survivors that ‘upholding honour’ does not legitimise coercive control and abuse. Many victims of HBA have been conditioned to normalise control and abusive behaviour for the sake of honour.

B) Increase professional confidence and prevent inappropriate responses, including stereotyping of cases which come from minority communities, i.e. always thinking abuse is HBA, if it takes place within minority communities.

A) Greater understanding of what HBA is. Recognise it is a form of Domestic Abuse (situated in VAWG) to enable it to be dealt with it in the same ‘zero tolerance’ way, without losing connected nuances linked to honour which can increase risk/make it more difficult for victims.
