Ok #AcademicTwitter, #epitwitter, I've got a question. I have lots of exciting ideas. But keep feeling stuck. Is Idea X a R01 idea? An R21? A pilot idea? When do you begin to mold an idea into a particular funding stream? How do you avoid losing the excitement along the way?

As an example, my Research Aim 1 from a previous 5 year grant app was funded as a pilot. I will use the preliminary data to reapply. You can do it! #epitwitter #WomenInSTEM

You have an R01 idea only when you have enough prelim data (lots) to support it. R21 vary by institute. Some support more, but many times the prev advice is right on. Suggest two things...1/

First suggestion: get as many grant examples as you can and look at their scope. 2) go to NIHReporter and find funded R03,R21,R01 Grant's in your field and see how big they are

Last thought - use your new investigator status wisely (applies to R01s but not R21s).

PS - Don’t forget about the foundation and internal grants. They may be easier to get than a federal grant and are a great way to get the necessary prelim data.

Lots of prelim data go to R01. If not, go for R21 (or R03, R34, etc). I disagree with those who say smaller grants aren’t worth it - yes R21s have tougher pay lines but if you don’t have the prelim data it’s a waste to try for an R01.

Most of the time an R21 is not worth it. Just write the R01.
