What else takes a lot of land? 40,223 sq mi - land leased by the oil and gas industry. 13,000 sq mi - US land impacted by coal surface mining. My favorite: 33,750 square miles - land set aside to grow the corn used to make ethanol.https://www.freeingenergy.com/how-much-solar-would-it-take-to-power-the-u-s/ …

Also we’re learning that crops and solar photovoltaic *together* on the land can improve the efficiency of both.https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/09/190903091441.htm …

Unfortunately, 100x100 miles is a heck of an area where wildlife habitat is lost. I guess there could be some configurations to lower the impacts
-
habitat loss? Doesn't sound like you've visited west texas ;) seriously tho
@FreshEnergy does a fantastic job of using solar land as pollinator habitat. Check them out! - Još 5 drugih odgovora

Distributed energy production and storage! We can't rely on a single central hub of production with our current distribution methods; the grid is TOO OLD and needs retrofitting like crazy.
-
Elon is using 100x100 as a size example, not the actual design. Distributed energy is exactly what
@tesla is doing. - Još 2 druga odgovora

Total parking area for US vehicles is also about 100 miles by 100 miles. 270 million vehicles by 4 parking spots per vehicle by 25 m^2 per parking spot. Parking is obviously distributed where people spend most of their time.
-
Simply mandating that parking lots be covered by solar panels would get us most of the way (minus lower multilevel garage area). Add all factories and you're probably good.
