    Under the terms of his previous owner’s will, Edmonson was to be freed at age 35. Instead, he was freed by the Emanciption Act at 30. Edmonson was likely the last enslaved person to work at the school.

    In Spring 1861, Edmonson likely tended to Union soldiers who boarded at the College. In June 1862, his enslaver, Ann Green, petitioned the government for $500 under the terms of the act. 5 months after emancipation, Georgetown paid her nearly $40 in back wages for his work.

    1. In honor of , we share the story of Aaron Edmonson. Edmonson was hired by his enslaver to Georgetown in 1859 to work in the dorms. He worked there until March 1862, one month before the Compensated Emancipation Act.
