And there's the world's longest rambling on caffeine and coffee. TBC. I'm feeling more engaged in my relationship with caffeine now. More aware. Which is great. If I ever lose that, I'll detox again.

Week 3 of caffeine fast, I was wondering why I was doing it. I've never had a real problem with caffeine, and now I was interested in what it would be like to reintroduce. Decided I could finish out the month before getting back into it.

I found that drinking decaf was nice when I met people for coffee dates. I definitely have some interesting social behaviors wrapped up in coffee - it elicits a cozy feeling. Something to explore further at some point.

Week 2 of caffeine fast I pretty much didn't think about or notice not having it. I did drink decaf periodically which is technically cheating bc decaf is like microdosing caffeine. But I was ok with that.

The first week of the caffeine fast was getting used to the habit change. It wasn't too tough. No major problems, but I did notice cravings. I also noticed that I didn't need caffeine how I once thought I did. This is a great take-away: I don't need it. It's a choice.

So far, it's difficult to gauge coffee's effect on sleep. TBD on the sleep front. I do stick to an "an earlier is better than later" mantra with coffee. But I can also drink coffee and take a nap immediately after (especially on airplanes

Interestingly, this first coffee experience did not include technology. It included pen and paper. I'm doing a tear down analysis of my relationship with tech right now so this is a good personal data point.

I thought that taking a caffeine break and going back in would result in an intense experience. It didn't. Maybe this was an indulgent wish, for some kind of psychedelic experience. Instead I got a psychoactive experience - my brain was lit up and actively engaged in work.

For example, my first cup of coffee after the break was yesterday and I sat down to unwittingly produce 12 pages of product design sketches for our thinking app. I noticed my intense focus, and entered a nice meditative state where I was open to any and all incoming ideas.

Taking a break from coffee and then going back has made it very clear to me that caffeine is a legit drug! I don't have a problem with this, I think that drugs can be a great tool in many ways. I have a new found respect for coffee now, and a greater awareness of its power.

Wrong. Coffee doesn't make me feel fresh and new ever. It just tunnel visions me into focusing for a while on something. This is fine, desirable sometimes, but it's not a "fix" for anything.

In the afternoons, when I'm more likely to be stressed or frazzled with work, I found myself turning to coffee as if it was an answer. As if it would focus me up and make me feel fresh and new again.

Most of my compulsive coffee drinking is in the afternoon - not the mornings. In the mornings yoga + meditation are my wake up. My first cup of coffee in late morning is a nice way to ease into the work day.

A bit over 3-weeks ago, I decided to take a break from caffeine. It started because of unrelated health stuff that blew over a while ago but I stuck with my caffeine fast. Happy to report that I'm back in the caffeine saddle and have a few notes to share.

Just changed my Slack theme from dark to light. And boy was that a gross experience. Switched back to dark, and then discovered the "Choco Mint" sidebar theme. Ooooh fun. Much better than the RED notifications that seemingly yell at me.
