CDC has been downplaying the actual transmission rates for some time now by promoting the misleading "community level" that measures hospital capacity not transmission, deaths, or how many develop long covid. But now CDC won't track any of it. Very concerning.

The CDC will cease tracking community levels and transmission rates of COVID-19 to coincide with the end of the public health emergency. What happens if there’s another big surge at some point?

if you're a band or crew member under any tour contract that forbids you from saying you have covid, i'd love to hear you out for a potential story. my DMs are open or email me: jillkrajewski.com/contact

incredible seeing all these concerts cancelled over “the flu” it’s almost as if tour contracts now ban performers from saying they have covid so the music industry makes more money pretending the pandemic is over

“Anyone who destroys a life is considered to have destroyed an entire world.” Our former opinion editor is an enduring stain on the Forward. Those who enabled her rise through our newspaper should condemn what they helped create.

I ride the subway a lot. Not a week goes by that a mentally ill person doesn't get on and terrorize the entire car—especially women, especially Asians. Usually the men just sit there and pretend it's not happening. It's a disgrace that working New Yorkers have to live like this.

CDC said chronic pain patients shouldn’t be on opioids, encouraged legislators to criminalize chronic pain patients who spent years on life saving pain management, and reversed that conclusion AFTER laws had been passed. CDC can get fucked.

With the COVID emergency ending, it's time to resurrect CDC to its former status. We need to: Build public trust in CDC Remove political interference Invest in its workforce & data systems Return full decision-making & leadership from the White House to the CDC

This is the biggest thing that irks me. I often see legitimate criticisms of AO3, and discussions of how to mitigate racism in fandom conflated with the puriteen bad takes. These are NOT THE SAME. The ppl selling you on that are racists who want to maintain the status quo.

(Are there puritanical censorious antis out there attacking people over harmless shit? Yes. But they don't have the institutional power that we have built for ourselves in fanspaces over the years, & they are NOT the same as fen of color making reasonable requests.)

Easily the funniest part of brain-dead conservative media defenses of Harlan Crow's patronage of Clarence Thomas is that how many of them end with "DISCLOSURE: ok yes Harlan Crow gives us a ton of money, too"

Starting Monday, Ohio State University won't have a president - instead top-level execs will report directly to the board of trustees until a new permanent president is name sometime later. That appears to violate the university's bylaws. chronicle.com/article/as-biz

The Kitty Genovese murder is a building block in modern conservative thinking, except everything that was reported about it was untrue
Quote Tweet
There weren't 38 witnesses to Kitty Genovese's murder, by *any* definition of "witness". Most who heard it had no reason to believe a murder was taking place. And of those that did, multiple people did call the cops! The problem is that THE COPS IGNORED THE CALLS.

Awesome to see more long-form local labor history online, thanks to : "Led by a Lithuanian band and waving red flags, the raucous group marching out of the Turtle Creek Valley burst through the front gate of the sprawling Edgar Thomson Works steel mill."
Quote Tweet
We're in a labor awakening with everyone from @pghsbuxunited to @WGAWest/@WGAEast to @Teamsters. But as our striking @stevemellon412 recounts, workers standing up for themselves and others is nothing new. Go back with him to the first week of May 1916: unionprogress.com/2023/05/05/two

More from the person who intervened. I think this is important bc he explains in this thread what he did and did not feel he could do about what was happening, the approach he chose, and why. It mattered y’all. Bystander intervention can be deeply important.
Quote Tweet
What's truly wild to me that after all these years I remember it almost as clearly as she did, and I was just a bystander. Im pretty sure it was the 147 express, because I was originally mad that the bus driver barely said anything and he didn't do so until we we getting on LSD
