In Australia, elections are run by a publicly-funded non-partisan electoral commission, and there are no app malfunctions, butterfly ballots, gerrymandering, racialized purges of the voter rolls, nor long lines even though everyone votes. Yields high public trust in the process.

This is the sign on United Methodist building today, which sits sandwiched between the Supreme Court and the Senate buildings, across from the Capitol. Bless them.

I have read the polls, analyzed the results, computed the crosstabs, weighted for field organization, and accounted for second-choice switching. It’s time to announce the verdict: It’s not clear who’s going to win Iowa.

Heading into Iowa, some wisdom from Krugman. Final three paragraphs worth reading twice. It's all about winning, even if policy wonks care a lot about the details. Yet for policy change, coattails matter, and we need to learn from 2018 there.

If you can pull yourself away from other news long enough to think about food this weekend, a very useful graphic here. In short, most of the carbon footprint of our food is what we eat, not our food's transportation.

Poll: Will you support the Democratic nominee even if it is not your candidate?

The nominee will take these proposals into the general election and endeavor to sell them there. Iowa Caucus participants (and D primary voters) have a lot to think about. Very different visions for the size and balance of the federal budget.

Something for Iowa to consider this weekend; there are big differences here in the size of government, as well as the deficit/debt trajectory.

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes famously said, “Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society.” Any company that wishes to be thought of as a good citizen needs to join the effort to combat corporate tax avoidance.

.'s newest senior fellow Kim Clausing (woohoo!) has a new brief estimating the very large potential revenue gains from various international tax options. Check it out - and the rest of her thread.

I also have a new short piece on policy options for international tax reform here: It provides a very concise overview of issues and options.

I propose a stronger per-country minimum tax right away, and moving toward formulary solutions (with other countries) in the medium run. I contrast these reform suggestions with other ideas including those in the OECD/G20 process, DBCFT, RPA-I, and the Saez/Zucman suggestions.

Within, and I propose improving corporate taxation. Papers can be downloaded: Jason’s proposal makes the corporate tax more efficient, and I focus on collecting the tax in a global economy, suggesting both short & medium run options.
