She has worked in different leadership capacities in Malawi and within the Africa region and carried out consultancies for development agencies. Her consultancy and research work continue to influence evidence-based decision making at national, district and community levels.
She has wide experience in conducting research on human resources for health. She facilitated the development of Human Resource for Health Research Agenda for Malawi; compiled a Human Resources for Health Malawi Country Profile;
conducted a situation analysis on the Existing Staffing Norms and Standards in Ministry of Health, work that contributed to the establishment of staffing norms for Malawi. She also conducted a comparative analysis of financial incentive strategies to motivate health care workers
in Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa. She also conducted health workers and employers survey for HRH 2030 project that is focusing on motivation and job satisfaction of eight cadres of health workers in Malawi.
In the recent past, Professor Chirwa has completed Political Economy Analysis on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Family Planning in Malawi; and Accountability Stakeholder Mapping to enhance national ownership on Women Integrated Sexual Health programme with funding from DFID.
Her work through consultancies continue to influence community-based interventions in maternal, child, neonatal health including SRHR. Her growing interest is in gender transformation in health.
Professor Maureen Chirwa is the Managing Director of Prime Health Consulting and Services (PHCS), a firm that she established to offer consultancy services in public health, nursing and midwifery, health systems, research and management.
