Well, maybe mistaken for greatness by those impressed with verbosity. I prefer Orwell's approach to writing. I also agree that a subject expert should be able to explain his ideas in simple language to a10 year old. I'm paraphrasing Einstein.

Is this an actual book assigned to undergrads?
-
It's an actual book, published by the University of Michigan Press, don't know if it's ever been on a syllabus for an undergraduate course. But undergrads often take graduate seminars. And in any case: FFS. What would George Eliot think?

I majored in English in undergrad & thought about going to grad school. But perusing the lit crit literature foreclosed that desire. I went to law school instead, where the language is also unintelligible but goes for a much higher price.

I still blame Immanuel Kant for starting all this bullshit. If his thesis advisor had gotten up from the desk and beaten him to death with his first manuscript we'd all be in a better place.
