not all salaried gigs meet that, you have to decide if that's right for you. Some companies will tell you "That's not what we pay our other freelancers". They are trying to guilt you down. Some will tell you "That's outside our budget". That's fine- you can decide to go lower.

but if you're one of those looking for where to 'start' when quoting for your first 'big' gig, start at $40\hr.

You can also negotiate quality bars. I did 24+ illustrations last year at $150 a pop because I could do 2 a day (and enjoy the extra free time). I did a single, paid test to prove to client and myself that 3 hrs per image was usable for them, they agreed.

Advertising should cost more because they expect much tighter feedback and turnaround iteration. Ad companies largely pay a lot for short bursts of intense work (not always, but in general).

a LOT of game clients charge "per deliverable"- as mentioned previously, just make sure you're setting their expectations properly. If it's $320 per deliverable, you need to make SURE your average work time, INCLUDING FEEDBACK is 8 hours.

This may seem expensive but if you work for 10 days, you get $3,200. Take half away for Taxes, Retirement, Emergency Fund, and Equipment cost, and you have 1,600 for 2 weeks of work, and you have a ~%50 chance of being booked at that same rate the next 2 weeks. That's why $40\hr.

It may be the case that MOST of your jobs are under $40\hr, and that's also ok, esp if you live in a low cost-of-living area. I'm just saying, when you get a big gig for People With Money, this is a place to start!

Additional anecdotal info: last year I had gigs for about 40% of the year. Some paid way under this. Some paid over this: freelance is bumpy. You can't calculate 40\hr x 40 hrs a week x 52 weeks a year. You charge this much (or more) when you can b\c it's how you survive drought.

As always, if you have questions about this or other things, throw 'em my way and I'll try to answer!
