A personal anecdote on trade politics. I teach econ to a largely liberal student body. For years, they would poke, prod and debate any pro-trade argument I showed them. Then since 2016, they yawn, and nod along as if Ricardo's pro-trade insights were always obvious.

Here's the evidence that Americans have become dramatically more likely to see international trade as an "opportunity for economic growth" rather than "a threat to the economy." https://news.gallup.com/opinion/gallup/267770/americans-views-trade-trump-era.aspx …pic.twitter.com/qOX3BdA4Mh

And notice that pro-trade -- and indeed, pro-NAFTA -- sentiment has been strengthening even more among Democrats than Republicans. Dems believe trade and trade deals have and will help the economy. Relatively speaking, Democrats are now the pro-trade party.pic.twitter.com/Is06CJ3LXu

Bill Clinton had it right in 2016.. It's irresponsible to dupe people in the Mid-West into thinking that jobs from the 1970s are going to come backpic.twitter.com/veHEa9jJmE

Bernie is way out of his league - and has been from the beginning. Expertise and experience in trade - and a host of other issues - await him on the other side. A few fiery slogans don’t make a campaign.

Sanders is seeking to divide the Democratic party with his statements. Dem party must be smart right now. Bernie is not a Democrat. Does Sanders care about Dem unity?

Also probably not great given Washington state votes on the same day, has many jobs tied to trade, and probably won't like his opposition to the Export-Import bank (or his support for banning internal combustion engines).

Washington has mail-in only ballots. Most people voted weeks ago. Lots of longshore and other union workers here who voted Trump because of his stated opposition to TPP and other trade deals.
