All part of making things more accessible. Unreal 4 is arguably the best engine around, but also highly expensive in terms of effort. On the other hand Unity (and @MonoGameTeam) do lack some things, but are more accessible for people that just want to make a game.

I don't know much about the landscape of game programming. Are a majority of people using unity these days to build everything? Is it mostly indie devs or established studios?

I can agree with that. I don't use unity but I do use C# for all of my game development such as tools and the engine. It is simply fantastic for game development. And with the current state and road map of NET Core, it is even better for game dev!!

You're absolutely right. Unity is really pushing the boundaries... Sooner than later C# would become the most popular language for game development.

I agree but not because of Unity. I'm doing raw engine development in C#. Things like Span<T> are game changers.
