    My latest for : Landlords almost always have the advantage in court when it comes to eviction. Can tech tools help bridge that gap? Thanks to John Pollock , Steph Rudolph and for their interviews!

    Anger. Despair. Those were the emotions running through me when I learned of the fatal Bronx fire. Apart from that specific building, I wanted to tell a larger story of race, poverty, immigration and building fires. Here’s my op-ed in ⁦⁩

    NYC Mayor Eric Adams is blaming a Bronx fire that killed 17 people on tenants’ failure to close the door. When BT’s asked Adams about heating complaints against the landlord, who was on Adams’ transition team, he said wasn’t aware of any. That’s not what we found.

    Our data is taken directly from City and State agencies, and is very up-to-date and accurate! We created our tools to bring transparency to housing data which is often (and intentionally) obscure and difficult to navigate. Many City employees themselves reference our tools!

    is BS. Much of the data on there is out of date or simply inaccurate. Anyone who doesn’t go straight to NYC’s actual available data online and know how to read it is lazy or doesn’t know as much as they think they do.

    Twin Parks has 174 open violations (), many of which are no-heat complaints. While the open doors allowed the fire to spread, we are not addressing the root cause here: non-compliant landlords depriving tenants of livable conditions.

    Our hearts go out to the families affected by the fire. Please consider donating to the relief fund for the families:

    A fire in a Bronx apartment building on Sunday killed at least 19 people, including nine children. A total of 63 people were injured. “This is going to be one of the worst fires that we have witnessed during modern times,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
