The future of Smash Bros. I think is such an interesting thing to think about. Where do they go after Ultimate? Obviously it's a huge money maker for Nintendo, so they're gonna wanna make more, but how do you even follow up something like Ultimate that has 70+ characters?
Definitely an option. I think that depends on how well these fighter passes are doing, especially now that we're two years past the initial launch. I'd be curious to know the attach rate for fighter passes.

Also, I have to imagine the cost of some of these guest character licenses (and the music!) must be pretty expensive for just being DLC for a two year old game.

That's true, although I suspect it's probably not as bad as it could be. People want their characters in Smash. If Cloud hadn't worked financially I imagine they wouldn't have got Sephiroth - Despite being a welcome addition by most, hardly anyone was desperate for his inclusion
