I think it can go both ways. I feel Smash strikes a near perfect balance. In the competitive environment, you generally know which characters are the top picks. So you prepare accordingly. On the off chance someone bodies you with Pichu, well......shit.

The thing is, sure, at a top level, there's only a handful of tournament viable characters, but that's only because at that top level, the players play so much that they know how to deal with some of the cheap shit that the lower tier characters can do.

Depends how good the devs are at balancing I suppose. Didn't MvC2 only have like 6 characters played competitively out of 56?

Oh I think I misunderstood. You mean players learning all the opponents characters. I can see it being a problem yeah, although I personally like it when someone gets good at an oddity that no one plays, even if it means losing

It can def be tough competitively when you need to learn all those matchups. I never found it overwhelming personally, but I find smaller rosters to be more manageable and more balanced when learning matchups. Even tho big rosters are fun.

More modern fgs get around this by having really strong/important universal mechanics. That is, Guilty Gear has way fewer chars than DBFZ but theres far more complexity to the matchups because characters share fewer options

If you're an avid regular player of a game and you only have a set amount of characters and no one new is introduced to the game, and you've already mastered the other characters and understand their way styles, it would get stale. Adding addtl chars is essentially fan service.

So like in HOTS for instance, I love it when they add new characters. There are 89 total so far, and it does not feel like that many since I know them all, apart from the recent addition of Mei. Thanks Blizzard!

I think at a certain point, characters’ play styles are gonna double up (there’s only so many ways a character can fight) so I think you’re fine
