Wasn't it Diablo which always was known as an ARPG/Hack 'n Slash?

I love it. When I hear hack and slash I picture wild crazy combat that never ends. Usually end up not living up to that, but it sounds cool and get some every time.

Well, that's the issue Mitch was talking about - first thing that comes to mind would be Dynasty Warriors, not Diablo. While Diablo 2 gave you an opportunity for quite easygoing builds, Diablo 3 streamlined things - neither really "neverending combat" nor mindless button mashing.

I also don't like hack and slash. I've heard "character action game" and "spectacle fighter" to describe games like DMC and Bayonetta

I used to use character action as well, but the more I thought about it, the less I knew what that really meant and why there needed to be a distinction between an action game and a character action game.
