The response to my Samurai Shodown review has been overwhelmingly positive, and that just makes me feel great. However, I wanna touch upon one of the criticisms a few people have brought up. So here's a quick thread.

I totally get that it's the fighting mechanics that are most important, which is why I give SamSho a great score regardless, but we can't pretend that story modes don't matter if we want fighting games to continue to grow and evolve.

I can't tell you how many non-fighting game fans have told me how much they're looking forward to MK11, not because of the great fighting mechanics, but because they've fallen in love with Netherrealm's story modes and want to see how the plot unfolds.

Story modes add value beyond just giving people who want to play fighting games as a single player something to do. They flesh out the world, give personality to its characters, and most importantly, they bring in new fans.

I get that story modes can be expensive, but like most of the best fighting games, it's all about risk vs reward. Mortal Kombat took a big risk investing in its story mode, and it paid off huge for them.

Sometimes it doesn't pay off. DBFZ had a pretty weak story mode that was longer than it needed to be, but I still prefer that effort as opposed to just leaving it at an arcade mode and calling it a day.
