Success in any industry rarely comes easily, but it makes no sense to me to guard the title so fervently, even at the starting line.

I don't think Larry from Buttsville, NJ, with his 12 followers, is gonna cause the collapse of the VO industry because he's got "voice actor" in his twitter bio, even tho he's only ever done voices for his cousin's flash animations.

If Larry looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, loves being a duck, and is willing to put in the hard work to be a successful working duck, he is for all intents and purposes a duck. A duck learning to duck better is still a duck. A crappy duck is still, regrettably, a duck.

And even if Larry does get good, chances are a gig that pays the industry standard isn't gonna take a chance on him if he isn't even willing to call himself a duck. To me, you gotta be willing to call yourself a duck if you wanna book that first gig, and long b4 you actually do.

But even then, my original tweet had nothing to do with "practical tips on succeeding in the industry", or implications of using the title, and everything to do with wholesome personal growth as an actor.

Just as a curiosity, Cor. As someone who went through the work of taking classes, has done unpaid walla in anime that has been featured on TV, has a professionally done commercial demo, but hasn’t booked a named character role, would it offend you for me to call myself a VA?

No, because you got screwed. You should have been paid for your work in walla. That is unfortunate that that happened to you and everyone should get paid for their work.

But with the classes and the demo then yeah you would not be a professional. Anyone can get themselves classes and a professionally done demo. Just like anyone can buy a plane and take flight lessons but that doesn't make them a pilot.

I got my first walla session not even a month or two after I started pursuing voice acting. So I guess I was a pro then? I think it’s very sad to hear that that is what is important, not the years of learning and money spent on classes and a demo to hone those skills

There are babies that get sag within a few months of being born but they are making money. It is a shame that you would look down on my skills as a child actor when I started when I was working and working really hard. There are people who book the lead role in there first

Whoa, looking down on what now?
