My thing is even with a lot of training that doesn't make you that thing until you do it. It's like I'm not gunna call myself a doctor until I actually reach that PHD. But even if I have 6 years of med school that doesn't make me a doctor until I reach that goal.

It's just disrespectful to me if they don't have their credits is all. They get that one job though they can call themselves a voice actor all the time! I just need something actually on your resume.

that's a valid point. And yeah, if you wanna be a doctor, there's the whole technical requirement of completing a doctorate. But I don't think such a requirement exists for VO.

I was hesitant to call myself a voice actor in the beginning, too, for fear of having my resume (or lack thereof) scrutinized and ridiculed. Even after I'd grown confident enough to introduce myself as a VA, I'd be met with some quip about whether I "had an IMDB" to prove it.

And that miserable feeling that all the risks you've taken and the hard work you've put in won't be validated until you become a "somebody," isn't something you should have to endure.

It nurtures an unhealthy, accomplishments-oriented approach to VO, which to me is antithetical to why most of us become actors in the first place. We do it for our love of storytelling.

That's why I'm personally opposed to deciding a person's claim to the term based on how many roles you've booked. Looking back, I wish I'd worried less about proving myself/making my investments pay off...

...and just had more fun. Because I could have. I would've come out a happier and healthier human for it.

Sure, there are folks who will get a little ahead of themselves. But I don't think someone who's decided to pursue the art in earnest diminishes the hard work I've put in just by using the term. If anything, I believe thinking of yourself as a voice actor is step number one.

Believing you gotta HAVE the credits before you ARE a voice actor seems intuitive, and its certainly a belief I once held. But after some reflection, I think you'll have a better, healthier time if you ARE before you HAVE. [End of my novel]
