I do have negatives about DMC5, but honestly, they're so minor in the grand scheme of things that they'd just be a series of nitpicks, and in a review format where I have a limited word count, I'd rather focus on the things that I'm glowingly positive about.

(Also games don't start at 10 and get reduced based on the number of negatives a review has about a game. Please get out of that mindset if that's what you ever thought.)

But the biggest thing is that, on the IGN scale, a 10 is a masterpiece. Now, I think that's up to a bit of individual interpretation, but to me, that means a game that is the golden standard in the genre. One that pushes the genre forward.

DMC is at the top of its class when it comes to stylish character action games, but I dont think it's quite ambitious enough give it that extra push to consider it a masterpiece. Still, what a game.

I also think you can give something a 10 even if there are flaws-- because nothing is perfect. Like I'd give Breath of the Wild a 10, despite a shoddy frame rate in places and some other minor things, as I feel like everything else comes together so well and creates magic.

Not arguing your point at all, you're right, just saying that reviews are a subjective opinion. A reviewer can assign a score based on their overall impression and experience, while others would criticize giving a perfect score to a game that has inarguable flaws.
