I mean I could name a few other things that started off unpopular like: Gay rights/marriage/adoptions, social security, medicare, LGBTQ, ACA/Obamacare, mixed race marriages, $15 minimum wage, black lives matter, global warming/climate change, ... The list goes on and on.
