What this "wokeness" is that they so object to is simply this: a growing cultural narrative, counter to the dominant cultural narrative, that says many different kinds of people exist, and, since they exist, they matter just as much as anybody else.

This narrative challenges dominant assumptions. The challenge takes the form of criticism. They are so unused to criticism, so entirely unable to handle it, that they experience it as an attack. Dominant assumptions have protected them. They've grown quite fragile as a result.
