Last Friday, I was able to join the 2020 launch celebration, here at . Increasing the number of Latin Women in is personally important to me but, even cooler, we were also able to bring in students from 2 SD Elementary schools to participate! 👊

THREAD: A brief review of Catch-22 when it comes to and need for more diagnostic screening capability. Hospitals can roll out RT-PCR based test CDC developed. They all have Roche systems to run these tests. The technology is fairly straightforward. Here’s the rub 1/9

This still seems as clear as mud. Is an app where the patient isn't actively sitting on the other side pushing a button, the patient accessing or is it directing it to a 3rd party? This is why HIPAA itself needs to be updated.

So much data is potentially useful in health care, and in managing wellness which I see as high growth area. The challenge IMO is optimizing data for efficient storage & processing and that includes how a health system can parse it + any necessary security tagging

Top 3 tips for companies looking to engage with patients: 1) Ask up front what a vendor's patient readiness is, what effort is required of the patient to get connected--forms, apps or software to download and set up, etc. 2) Plan privacy/security diligently 3) Test, esp UX

T4: Another aspect of this privacy question is "how does my digital identity get matched for authentication/authorization to data and for data resolution purposes (finding my chart)", another nut to crack...some good work on that in ONC's FAST, Carequality, HL7

T4: This is a huge question so to answer generally I think we will find ways to scale new PGD data sets and use cases for collaboration on them in parallel and alongside emerging data transfer modalities (both communication + exchange of PHI) other over the next few years

T3: I think we will see much more of this type of collaboration over time. Happen to be working with a co-lead from in an industry collab of vendors working on a new interoperable secure messaging standard--so that one secure app's messaging can talk to another.

T1: Just to clarify--is the question about two-way communication between patients and providers over social media?

"Do privacy settings on certain apps make it more difficult to connect?" That is certainly one of the elephants!

My kids' pediatricians use Facebook and Twitter for a lot of real time updates like when flu shots become available, and other general health advice topics. It's great for quick updates that they find more cumbersome to do through their website

Glad to speak at the Annual Meeting this morning. Patients need and deserve control over their records; is the single biggest step we can take toward that goal.
