    When meeting the needs of students, lowering expectations is never part of the equation!

    Meeting students' needs means we don't waver from high expectations, but persistently challenge how we get there.

    Break apart the standards to gain clarity of the learning...for yourself AND your students.

    Our job is not to teach the standards. It’s to break the standards apart, discover what's interesting about them to students, and then create learning experiences to bridge the two.

    As a school district leader I’ve dedicated a career to leaning into circumstances that have called for me to enter “the arena” on behalf of ALL children. We only pass this way once.

    This is also true for adult learning....it "is not clean, linear or quiet." I would add that it is not usually easy...but it is worth it!

    Can we please stop looking for bandaids, including asking others to do the work for us?

    Here's a bandaid: "diverse" books. Simply adding "diverse" books into the curriculum is not doing anti-racist work—NOT if you don't have a critical pedagogy to go with it. I'd even argue that teaching such books as a racially unconscious person can do more harm than good.

    This brought tears to my eyes! Best wishes to EACH student in the graduating class of 2019.

    Mr. Harrel does some part-time video production work for our school district. He created this video that highlights seniors representing all 18 elementary schools. Watch and share if you have a few minutes.

    THIS!!

    My students are generally v. "quiet & compliant." I have to help them *unlearn* that sitting passively = academic success! Step One: shutting my pie hole so I can hear their ideas. That's hard b/c like every professor I know, I ♥️the sound of my own pontificating.
