    As my good friends and note, “The single most effective step Congress can take is to enact comprehensive privacy legislation to address the explosion of digital information that is presently not covered by existing, narrower privacy laws.” Great read!

    There are signs of life on federal privacy legislation. In Morning Consult ⁦⁩ and I urge Congress to finish the job it began with the first Facebook hearings in 2018.

    A good path for rule making and improving trust in the technology sector is to focus on data brokers who skirt privacy and transparency, and gatekeepers who use security or privacy as a pretext for other bad behavior. Thanks and for the important piece.

    New: I spoke to 12 current/former FTC officials about the opportunities and challenges of its new privacy push. A lot of it still hinges on new funding, which will be key for new rules and companies' counterpunches:
