We have too many military bases (with ~800 abroad). Pentagon accounting & associated waste is a scandal. Add expensive procurement programs (just F-35 will have a lifetime cost > $1.5 trillion).

It's a good deal to be the CEO of a major defense contractor. The compensation packages are tens of millions. Meanwhile complex new weapons systems like F-35 tend to not operate reliably as planned. New carrier, the Gerald Ford, is way over at $13.5 B and that's just the boat.
