What is even arguably the point of this @sfchronicle story? That we should assume anyone who tries to steal a cell phone is going to shoot their mother?
This is dangerous, fearmongering journalism in its purest form. It's got it all. 1/https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Man-accused-of-killing-mother-in-Sacramento-was-15897826.php …

to be fair, robbery by definition requires some use of force, as opposed to burglary. It's reasonable to wonder if a person who robs someone else *could be a danger to the public. But obviously each case is unique.

“rob•ber•y rŏb′ə-rē n. The act or an instance of unlawfully taking the property of another by the use of violence or intimidation.” I have a hunch if somebody did that to you, you wouldn’t like it. Not one bit. Wake up.

I have a hunch that if you were robbed, you wouldn’t think, “oh, that poor, pitiable criminal with a tough childhood.” And say, “Here, take my Apple Watch too!” No. You wouldn’t like it. Not one bit. You’d feel violated like you have never before, and you’d be mad as hell.
