I teach a HS class called Human Services I teach skills about interacting w ppl in different work settings. My classes are often over looked because they are “electives” these classes NEED to be part of the CORE CURRICULUM along with MENTAL HEALTH, NUTRITION AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT
A mental health condition is not tantamount to a threat. But often, that’s how police officers see it—and respond with unnecessary force. These skills need to be taught in school! Community service should start in Middle school and it should be a requirement. When students see compassion they give compassion.

Police should not be mental health first responders. They’re not just unqualified, their role as cops makes them ill suited to do it. No amount of training will change that the police are a fundamentally violent institution.

Yeah, I don't normally vote for sheriff (if for no other reason than that it's hard to find info) but in 2018 I voted to reelect ours. He'd set up a program where 911 calls about mentally ill people (common here) are directed to mental health professionals, not deputies.

Yea!! Please! It’s also why they need to be better trained in recognizing mental illness and de-escalating it instead of what often happens that leads to tragedy.

Training is key, but more than this. Teachers undergo mon. 6 yrs of education + yearly continual education & we pay poverty wages & load them with debt. Why are police officers paid white collar salaries for 8mo. training when they carry *weapons* into our schools & communities?

Yes, police across the U.S. must have training in how to properly and safely engage with a person presenting mental health issues. And, considering their high stress levels, police must be required to undergo independent psych evaluations. Especially those w/violence complaints.
