Couldn't agree with that piece more. Taught in several state schools for many years and, with one honourable exception, the mechanisms and desire for helping the gifted achieve their potential was non existent :(

Good article. To me the problem is: 1. The standard of teaching 2. Large class sizes 3. The bizarre fact that it is “trendy” to be stupid or not excel. If you do then it leads to bullying.
-
Moreover, schools have changed to a more socialist principle where achieving excellence and aspiring to higher things is frowned upon - Just getting through seems to be all that teachers want for pupils.
-
Very true. And I was talking to a friend from the US recently. Black kids are mocked if they do well in class. Told they are “being white”. It is very sad.
-
...and the very same bullies then complain after they leave school that they can't get a job. Fools.

OK so everyone pay more tax and adequately fund state education. Let's have smaller class sizes, individual attention and all the other advantages of a private education

My secondary school was a "specialist sports college" which in real terms meant that if sport wasn't your thing you can sod off. If it was your thing then you were lavished with all the support going.

There is no bias in our better universities except a justified one in favour of excellence. It's a perspective our sick joke of a left-dominated 'comprehensive' school system might well emulate instead of handicapping pupils from poorer socio-economic strata iaw its warped dogma

Perhaps a nationalised state education system is simply not the best way to ensure all our children get a decent education?

Problem starts at primary school. No coincidence that those who passed the 11+ in our year came from houses with books and parents who supported their child's learning at home.

never thought I’d agree with JHB but yes something is wrong in many schools, Tory underfunding & low teacher morale for starters
