How dare you talk to me in such a condescending manner. “I think he means”. I know full bloody well what I mean thank you very much. I mean what the EVIDENCE tells us. Private school kids 33% more likely to get in than state school kids. White kids twice as likely as black kids.https://twitter.com/frasernelson/status/999238866950344704 …

Yes, isnt it remarkable how those who can afford intensive and expensive tutoring achieve better grades. That does NOT equate to greater ability, nor potential, and certainly isn't equitable.pic.twitter.com/BOIja3Oryg

As they are subject to smaller class sizes, greater funding and likely stable and secure home lives. A student in a standard comp from a disadvantaged background and chaotic background who attains 2 A’s and a B is probably the brighter and has achieved more don’t you think?
-
you cannot buy academic intelligence no matter how hard you try, many students in comps from disadvantaged backgrounds go on to do great things... many see eduation as their way forward, a late polish friend had four sons, all of whom against the odds went on to become lecturers.

And why is that Julia?
-
Because the other kids are too busy stabbing and throwing acid over each other ?
-
it is people like you who did not study at school who insult young people who have ambition and a goal.. you sound like an American who approves of gun laws. we do not have the problems they have.
-
We don’t have the problems the Americans have? - You’ve obviously not seen the murder rate currently in London... stabbing people isn’t an ambition you halfwit

-
I have seen the stabbing rate in london and blame the media for constantly highlighting it... have you any idea how many young people have been murdered by Guns in the uSA and NO stabbing is not an ambition nor is the removal of community policemen and investment in our children.

Isn’t that part of the deal, pay for privilege receive straight ‘A’s and a confirmed entry into an elitist university? You only have to look at some of this government’s ministers to realise what money buys and it isn’t intelligence!
-
Do you seriously think kids get 3 A* A Levels without doing a lot of hard work, simply because their parents pay? Private schools are selective so of course a higher percentage get good grades. The real issues are poor teaching and low expectations in the state sector.
-
Do you think hard work is *more likely* to get results in conjunction with intensive tutoring, small classes and other material support from an institution that sees Oxbridge entrance as a key part of their marketing? This ISN’T about denigrating any kids who study hard.
-
According to some it’s just ‘part of the deal’. The culture of low expectations in the state sector is appalling. Look what happened when Mossbourne - in deprived Hackney - got 11 kids in one year into Cambridge, the NUT started kicking off about ‘privilege’. Disgusting.
-
I agree. The secondary system as a whole sends all kinds of screwy signals to the tertiary system about who are the best students: both low expectations at one end and hothousing at the other. I don’t know enough about Mossbourne, but the class system mentality cuts both ways.
-
There is a terrifying culture of peer-groups dissing academic achievement, rarely challenged by teachers. Add that to street culture and most of these clever kids don’t stand a chance. This is what needs to be addressed, not Oxbridge (an easy target).
-
Oxbridge (and Oxford more specifically) is part of a complex problem. David Lammy has been posting examples of where Oxford seems to have biases, and even Oxford admits it needs to do better. But *of course* Oxbridge isn’t the only source of problems.
-
Tbh, I think part of the problem is having Oxbridge alone at the apex. They really are very public-school style places. There needs to be a broader very top rank. I think they would benefit from greater pressure in competing for students. But it’s a difficult knot to untie.

PARENTAL INPUT ALERT! If you pay £20,000 a year to send your kid to private school you make damn sure the kid delivers. Plenty of kids from state school who also succeed, I just wish our politicians built them up instead of knocking them down all the time.
