This monstering of Oxford is ludicrous. It is a leading global institution, not a plaything of govt. Fix the school system.

Trainee Teachers on PG course I led in NW told me that there were plenty of good Universities in the North of England and Newcastle or Leeds or Manchester or Liverpool were just as good as Oxbridge. They're now putting something back unlike Oxbridge hacks and politicians.

Happened to a school mate of mine - "You won't fit in unless you can afford to host dinners and wear the right clothes" etc etc. I've worked in many top institutions and that man was the brightest person I ever talked to.

Far too many people blame teachers for their own misgivings! Far too many people blame teachers for society’s problems. “My teacher said this, my teacher said that so everything that’s wrong with me is their fault”! Pathetic attitude. Why didn’t their parents encourage them?

Genuinely true some of the dumbest people I know went to oxbridge . Often the school system isn’t even about being academic it’s about remembering useless information. Once at university yes good work is done, but school system undermines everyone, in fact puts people back years

Just a point that young people sometimes need guidance towards something they can excel at rather than something with for them a high risk of failure. Getting to Oxford and dropping out, definitely heart breaking.

I would love to see the profiles of these anecdotal "many people" as after 20 years in education I've never heard this said to any able student from anyone. Quite the opposite.

The initial point is anecdotal. As for that survey, 44% are recommending Oxbridge always or usually, with another 29% recommending on occasion. That would make up far more state-educated students than are actually enrolled. So why the discrepancy if they are qualified & applying?
