Stop telling black kids Oxford doesn't want them! Stop it! It's a lie, it puts people off applying & it builds a victim narrative in the wider black population that disempowers people & holds them back. Stop it!!https://twitter.com/JonHolb/status/999163014166253568 …

There are many things that make black students feel more welcome and that feeling is very individual. A sense of belonging needs to be cultivated and many black students like diversity in both curricula and academic staff.
-
So black people only feel welcome among other black people? Really? I attended a school as one of only 3 white kids in my year - it never bothered me.
-
I was one of 10 black people in my entire town and as consequence I have been de-sensitised to the issue but that i am not all black people. I would assume that you wouldn’t speak for all white people and there would be situations and places where they would also feel unwelcome?

The overwhelming group identity of people who go to Oxford is, at the time, "People going to Oxford". If you get into Oxford people at Oxford think you're the bees knees, as indeed they think of themselves. That self-importance is so overwhelmingly dominant all else is swept away
-
You obviously speak for everyone who goes to oxford and therefore I acquiesce. You word is gospel.
-
My word does tend to be gospel - that's true. But in this case I'm trying to convey an idea to you of why it's a mistake to think of Oxford as unwelcoming to ethnic groups, namely that your ethnicity ranks very low against your being a "person who got into Oxford".
