So does that mean it would be deeply sexist and insulting to men if he’d said the economy is “impotent”? No. Get a grip, people.https://twitter.com/bbcsarahsmith/status/996681674124611584 …

Is it just me, or is using “menopausal” to describe the economy deeply sexist and insulting? Apparently it describes economies “past their peak and no longer potent”. Words fail me https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2018/05/15/menopausal-uk-economy-risks-once-in-a-century-slump-warns-deputy/ …

Do you equate the menopause with impotence?

Do you? The full quote used the words “no longer potent”, which suggests impotency. I’d have thought a top barrister would be better at reading. But you’re just bored and looking for a Twitter spat, aren’t you?

Come on, it was a very lazy and unfortunate use of menopause! Particularly when older women in the City have a tough time.

My 23 year old son thought that it was a bit off and was insulted for his menopausal mother! I am very anti the current trend for universal offence taking, but I think this was a bit thoughtless and unnecessary

The important thing is that the economy is in a shit (another metaphor?) state and people like you put it there. You must be proud.

Impotence can also be described as 'helplessly inactive' ... I don't think the same can be said of the menopause @JuliaHB1 , so your example is a false equivalence... That said, it is a bit precious to assume offense because of how people use words!

You are being silly. The primary meaning of "impotent" is "powerless" Its use to describe male sexual function is secondary. (See also "potent" for "powerful, strong") There is not a different standard usage of "menopausal" I'm surprised that wasn't obvious to you.pic.twitter.com/I69jcFIYSt
