I have rarely seen a more stupid, irresponsible and plain idiotic policy proposal than handing every 25 year old ten grand. Quite who spiked David Willetts’ drink is anyone’s guess. Why not throw in a free holiday in Barbados too, just for good measure.

Basic income trumps this idea for sheer silliness, surely?

Well, no, because basic income is, by nature, minimal.

"loosing"? Lol, first of all, how are they losing any per se? Also, it's all fine to wax lyrical about aspiration, drive and entrepreneurship, but grants for business people are few & far between, and the job market is stagnant. It's not as simple as you glibly put it.

I was simply trying to outline the difference between a basic income and other forms of benefit. At the moment if you are on minimum wage and get the chance of promotion you have a very real chance of not seeing any benefit of it because the other incomes you receive could drop.

"if you are on minimum wage and get the chance of promotion" is highly unlikely - most NMW jobs are not conducive to career progression. Sure, less incentivisation that what. Moral of the story is to have a basic income of no more NMW (£15000, although NMW should be higher)

I have seen many people on low incomes turn down small promotions and opt out of pay rises because they would be worse off. Granted, its not as bad as a problem that it used to be. A basic income would stop people from worrying about that by not being affected by other incomes.

Anecdotal evidence isn't the basis of a logical argument. I'd see your POV if you said NMW should be increased enough so that tax credits can be minimised to incentivise all people to not turn down promotions to avoid being 'worse off'.

I would love to see that happen but wouldn't small business owners suffer? I think that the two of us debating methods of increasing incomes both through universal basic income or NMW goes to show that something needs to happen as capatalism isn't working for everyone in society.
