People were (rightly) demanding the deportation of ILLEGAL immigrants, not of people with every right to be here. The Home Office clearly weren’t bothered either way. That’s the problem.https://twitter.com/dpjhodges/status/989399928349786113 …

The reason the Home Office has targets is because there was a perceived backlog of illegal migrants waiting to be deported. Ministers were castigated for not dealing with the issue, and officials told they were "not fit for purpose". Now we act with faux outrage at targets.

And they weren’t bothered because they had been told to create a hostile environment.

...for illegal immigrants. Either HO staff were acting against the rules (sack them) or they were told to deport regardless of status by HO senior civil servants (sack the senior staff) or by Ministers (sack them). Someone’s head has to roll.

The biggest issue is that the mandarins see themselves as essentially untouchable. Its high time to carry out a root & branch reform of the whole civil service from the very top down - it has worked to it's own agenda for far too long (in spite of whatever Govt was in power).

Puzzles me how did some Windrushers got to Jamaica without passports. Then couldn’t come back because they didn’t have one.

Don’t think anyone would deport someone regardless of their status, it’s whether they have proof of their status or not.

Agreed Julia it is departmental managers who have made a mess of things and it is they whose heads should roll. Politicians make policy they can't be expected to micromanage.

I don't get this. Conservatives spent the entirety of the Cold War (rightly) pointing out the problems with bureaucratic overreach. Now they wish to say that the problem is not desire for state control, just the indiduvals who implemented the policy.

Gosplan also had the directive of providing endless prosperity for all. The problem was not bad individuals implementing a noble policy.

Issue is, as with anything that requires bureaucratic filtering of people, there will be collateral damage to innocent people being caught in the tough system people are supposed to be demanding. Some struggle to accept that & the connection between their aspiration & the reality

Surely you're not suggesting a large Govt bureaucracy is not fit for purpose? Not fit for purpose.. Hmm.. That's catchy, someone should use that.
