People were (rightly) demanding the deportation of ILLEGAL immigrants, not of people with every right to be here. The Home Office clearly weren’t bothered either way. That’s the problem.https://twitter.com/dpjhodges/status/989399928349786113 …

The reason the Home Office has targets is because there was a perceived backlog of illegal migrants waiting to be deported. Ministers were castigated for not dealing with the issue, and officials told they were "not fit for purpose". Now we act with faux outrage at targets.

And they weren’t bothered because they had been told to create a hostile environment.

...for illegal immigrants. Either HO staff were acting against the rules (sack them) or they were told to deport regardless of status by HO senior civil servants (sack the senior staff) or by Ministers (sack them). Someone’s head has to roll.

The biggest issue is that the mandarins see themselves as essentially untouchable. Its high time to carry out a root & branch reform of the whole civil service from the very top down - it has worked to it's own agenda for far too long (in spite of whatever Govt was in power).

The home office was described as 'not fit for purpose' under the last Labour Govt. The Conservatives biggest error was not dealing with this useless dept head on!

The only problem with that Julia; and I DO support Windrush, is that by NOT sorting out their own immigration status they became "illegal" within the legal framework!

I think the Home Office were ‘bothered’ (ie not ambivalent or ignorant) but were deluded in expecting everyone to have kept 50-60 years of documentation to prove how they came here and their kids’ nationality. Bring on ID Cards, Simples

The only target they need for illegal immigrants is to deport every single one of them as soon as they are located.

Oh for gods sake, once again everyone is navel gazing and coming up with sinister reasons. This is nothing more than normal public sector incompetence which is endemic from local Govt to the NHS and everything in between.

For years the home office has been hitting soft targets, deporting innocent people who have every right to be here while murderers rapists and vile criminals are left to roam our streets with impunity.

@AmberRuddHR needs stricter control over the civil servants in her department if it transpires that this has been done on purpose, as a means of undermining genuine immigration controls

Didn’t Mrs May and Ms Rudd believe John Reid who, when taking office as Home Secretary in 2006, said his department was ‘not fit for purpose’?

I think they were bothered. But if people have no documentation how can you know they exist? Most of the Windrush generation did get their status documented.
